IBEW's Position on SOPA & PIPA

Sisters and Brothers:

Two weeks ago, popular websites, including Google and Wikipedia, postured intense opposition to two online piracy bills, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act of 2011 (PIPA).  The IBEW supports both SOPA and PIPA, the fact that the broadcasting and manufacturing industries stand to lose billions of dollars a year to piracy, directly affecting our members is strong reason to support both these bills.

While it appears that the hype last week has stalled SOPA and PIPA, and a comeback this year is unlikely, the IBEW will continue backing the legislation.   There has been some of our members, and others, critical of our support for these bills and so that you may further understand SOPA and PIPA and discuss the reason for our support of the anti-piracy legislation, I have attached herewith a detailed statement on the specifics regarding SOPA and PIPA and a letter sent to the House and the Senate judiciary committees regarding the IBEW’s position.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
